The Good…:I read this book with my 5th grade students and they were completely sucked into the novel. So much so, that they didn’t balk at having reading for homework, and doing extensive writing about some of the novel’s themes and events. The book also helped reenforce what they’ve learned all school year in history and language arts about the American West, and gave them a context for these historical facts that I previously taught.
The Bad…:
Sadly, Eric Pierpoint has no plans to write a sequel to this amazing book. :( Hopefully, one day it’ll be made into a film. One can hope!
Do I Recommend?
YES! This story of three children, their dog, and a wanted man making their way west amid thieves, cholera, and a murderous band of outlaws if as informative to read as it’s fun. There is a bit of violence, reference to drinking and saloons, and other unsavory elements of the Old West, but it’s all in keeping with the story, and isn’t done gratuitously. If you’re looking for a historical fiction novel that’s fast-paced, then The Last Ride of Caleb O’Toole will be right up your alley.

Bought as a gift, greatly enjoyed.
A fascinating tale about Caleb O'Toole and his two sisters trying to escape from killers. Caleb and his youngest sister witnessed the murder of three people. This novel takes place in the old west at a time when there were cholera epidemics. Eric Pierpoint writes very well. He was "George" on Alien Nation.
Louis L'Amour ain't got nuthin' on you. Seriously. This is way better than any Lamour book I've read. It's so much more dimensional. Not only were the characters wonderful and the story exciting and more dramatic than I could have hoped for, it was also an amazing piece of historical writing. Very well researched. Absolutely loved it! Am passing it to everyone I love.
Lovely book from first time author Eric Peirpoint. The story of 3 orphaned kids making their way on the Oregon trail after the death of their folks from cholera.
Peirpoint does a great job of bringing historical fact and bringing his fictional kids into it.
Great read, was so good I started it and finished it in one day! Good for the whole family to read and discuss.
I found this book to be riveting - The words came alive on the page. This is a wonderful book for young people in terms of bringing history to life. It is enjoyable for adults, also, and would be a great book for the whole family to read and discuss. There is much to like about this book. Eric Pierpoint is to be commended for writing such an excellent book, especially his first as an author. I'm looking forward to his next book, which I'm hoping there will be.
Although this is fiction, this book kept me interested from beginning to end. It's easy to imagine a boy like Caleb O'Toole, and the unknown impact he may have had. This historical fiction is equally as good as the first edition in this series. The first being, "The Secret Mission of William Tuck", which I thoroughly enjoyed. Very eagerly awaiting the next edition in the series. Don't miss out on this one!
This yarn is a rootin' tootin' roller-coaster ride from start to finish. Caleb O'Toole and his two sisters, and their fierce little dog Tumble, face dangers of all kinds on their cross-country trip to find their aunt. From wolves and bad weather to Indians and outlaws there are challenges to be overcome at every turn. It takes a potent combination of love, determination, teamwork, honor, friendship, and luck to help them pull through. The action is fast-paced and the characters are colorful. Even though it isn't the kind of book I would normally read, I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you have a tween boy in your life, a copy of this book would make an excellent holiday or birthday gift. (And if you're lucky, maybe he'll let you read it when he's done.)
